AMSN Joins National Nurse Staffing Task Force
SEWELL, NEW JERSEY – In an effort to address workforce challenges impacting the health and viability of a today’s challenged nursing workforce, the Academy of Medical-Surgical Nurses (AMSN), the nation’s only specialty nursing organization dedicated to the practice of medical-surgical nursing, is participating in a national Nurse Staffing Task Force, launched by Partners for Nurse Staffing.
The Nurse Staffing Task Force – a diverse group comprised of front-line nurses, nursing leaders and other key stakeholders including patient safety representative, CEO, CFO and Human Resources – was launched recently by Partners for Nurse Staffing, a collaboration between the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses (AACN), American Nurses Association (ANA), American Organization for Nursing Leadership (AONL), Healthcare Financial Management Association (HFMA) and the Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI).
According to AMSN President, Summer Bryant DNP, RN, CENP, CMSRN, staffing issues are one of the top issues for the profession. “Staffing levels have a direct impact on patient, nurse, and organizational outcomes, yet our nurses continue to have to care for more patients than they should, leading to frustration, burnout, and poor patient outcomes. AMSN is pleased to participate in a national conversation about safe staffing for both patients and nurses.”
AMSN’s Monica van der Zee BSN, RN, CMSRN, PCCN-K, vice-chair of AMSN’s Legislative Committee, will participate in the Task Force to support the development of actionable and immediate strategies and practices to address nurse staffing issues, nursing wellbeing and nurse retention. Monica van der Zee practices at The University of Kansas Health System as Nursing Supervisor. She has worked as a nurse for over 20 years, first as an LPN and then as an RN. She has spent her career advocating for patients and their families and is now helping nurses to advocate for themselves.
