July 04, 2022 AMSN Hill Day: Advocating for Medical-Surgical Nurses

On June 27^th, the AMSN Legislative Committee visited Washington, D.C. and members of Congress to advocate for legislative issues important to medical-surgical nurses. This visit was AMSN’s second ‘Hill Day’ and first one in person because our 2021 Hill Day was completely virtual due to COVID-19. Some committee members had visits with congressional staff in person and others held Zoom meetings with their state legislators.

The federal agency charged with carrying out $140 million worth of programs for nurse and health care professional mental health following the COVID pandemic should incorporate and engage medical-surgical nurses in their implementation, says a May 21 letter from AMSN to the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), part of the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services.

Congress enacted and the President signed into law, at the last moment, stopgap funding legislation keeping Uncle Sam open until Dec. 10, 2020. After the Nov. 3 elections, Congress will reconvene in “lame duck” session to fund the federal government and AMSN priorities further into the new fiscal year.
