AMSN Hill Day:
July 04, 2022 AMSN Hill Day: Advocating for Medical-Surgical Nurses

On June 27th, the AMSN Legislative Committee visited Washington, D.C. and members of Congress to advocate for legislative issues important to medical-surgical nurses. This visit was AMSN’s second ‘Hill Day’ and first one in person because our 2021 Hill Day was completely virtual due to COVID-19. Some committee members had visits with congressional staff in person and others held Zoom meetings with their state legislators.

Congress, at press time, was completing work on “continuing resolution” legislation keeping Uncle Sam open through Dec. 11.

AMSN supported the House passing increases for Title 8 nurse workforce development, the National Institute of Nursing Research, and the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality late this summer. But the Labor-HHS-Education appropriations bill carrying these priorities was not taken up by the Senate.

Congress was preparing to go home for the stretch run to the November elections without passing additional COVID relief legislation since last March.

Through its Legislative Virtual Fly-in, AMSN had urged Congress to restore and strengthen the National Stockpile with PPE including N95 mask supplies, and to expand mental health resources needed to help patients and caregivers alike.
