December 02, 2020 Transgender Affirmation Surgeries

Today on National Transgender Remembrance Day (November 20), I would like to talk to you about taking care of transgender affirmation surgical patients.

My unit has the privilege and honor of caring for individuals who have undergone affirmation surgery. We currently care for individuals undergoing Vaginoplasties. We did specialized training in sensitivity, cultural differences, and the care of surgical sites.

November 30, 2020 Apocalyptic Nursing

We are all facing what I deem as apocalyptic nursing. None of us expected to be working under these conditions and I think it is appropriate terminology given the circumstances that we are facing.

As we face the second wave of COVID-19, hospitals are preparing for the worst. We, on the other hand, are preparing for the fight of our lives. So many of us have experienced the same thing. I am beaten up, tired, gasping for fresh air, and barely able to make sense of the first wave.

Wow, just wow! We’ve just wrapped our 29th AMSN Annual Convention and boy was it different.

For the first time ever, our convention was completely virtual. We made that decision earlier this year when we saw that the COVID-19 pandemic wasn’t going away and we knew that our nurses would be busy at work and unable to travel, not to mention that we knew planning a large group event wasn’t in anyone’s best interest.

November 01, 2020 A Look Back on the First AMSN Digital Convention

Well, that was certainly one of the best conferences I have ever attended. Yes, I am talking about the virtual 29th Annual AMSN Convention. And yes, I am somewhat prejudiced as I served as the program planning committee chair.

If you did not get to attend, I am so sorry. We had four days of great speakers, fun moments, and opportunities to connect with nurses across the United States and even internationally. Being virtual, I did not expect it to meet our usual standards, but it went far beyond my expectations.

October 20, 2020 Volunteer! ME? Yes, YOU!

Have you ever considered volunteering and sharing your expertise on the national level? All it takes is one tiny step forward and there will be no looking back.

Early in my career I was selected to present a poster at the AMSN national conference in Reno, Nevada. As I attended sessions and watched Committee Chairs, members and Board of Directors interact, my interest was piqued and I thought, “Wow, they look like normal nurses, people I could connect with and have fun while networking.”
