Finding Our Spark
October 25, 2021 Finding Our Spark Looking Back on the 30th Annual Convention

In all honesty, AMSN's board of directors were worried. The numbers for Covid-19 infections were on the rise in Florida, the location of this year's national convention. Since our first concern was for the safety of the attendees and their families, the decision was made to make the convention 100% virtual for the second year in a row.

That’s a Wrap: An Exceptional 30th Convention!
October 14, 2021 That’s a Wrap: An Exceptional 30th Convention! Enjoying AMSN’s Second Fully Virtual Convention

CEO's Corner - October 2021

What an absolutely wonderful convention. We had informative and engaging educational content, fantastic conversations and connection in the convention platform, and some community fun at our 30th anniversary painting party on Saturday evening.

Some of the highlights included Terry Foster’s funny opening “COVID Power Talk,” where we all acknowledged the difficulties encountered during the pandemic - but also how to cope using humor, positivity, and healthy attitudes.

AMSN Urges Congress to Support Building the Nurse Pipeline, but Action has Slowed

AMSN has been consistent in urging Congress to support nurse workforce development initiatives that build the pipeline advancing the supply of nurses needed now and in the future. Even working together with the Nursing Community Coalition to advance this important goal, congressional action has slowed this fall on the major legislation carrying these AMSN priorities.

What is Your 5-Year Plan?
October 10, 2021 What is Your 5-Year Plan? My answer is usually I don’t know.

Recently, I was speaking to a colleague about my career goals. I’ve always had goals and outcomes I have wanted to achieve personally and professionally, but I have never had a 5 or 10-year plan related to my nursing career.

Pronouns - A Key to Patient and Staff Inclusivity
September 16, 2021 Pronouns - A Key to Patient and Staff Inclusivity Registered Nurses should not be afraid to ask a patient their pronouns

Most people have probably seen a transgender or non-binary person on television or in the news, even if they don’t know anyone who identifies as trans or nonbinary in real life yet.

This summer we saw a trans woman become Miss Nevada and advance to the Miss USA pageant. Two transgender athletes competed in the Olympics for the first time. But unfortunately, we still have a long way to go to normalize and accept trans and non-binary people in our society.

The Fine Art of Oral Communication
September 14, 2021 The Fine Art of Oral Communication Technology has made significant changes in the lives we live

Processes have become more automated with less person-to-person interaction. The advent of text messaging is rapidly decreasing oral communications.

It is estimated that over 18 billion text messages are sent worldwide each day (shso.vermont.gov). Additionally, apps like Facebook and Instagram increase family and friend connections but further diminish the need for oral or face-to-face communications.

As a nation, we are increasingly relying on written forms of communication. It has been said that we are losing the fine art of oral communication.

It’s Convention Month!
September 06, 2021 It’s Convention Month! While it is no one’s first choice, there are some things to look forward to with a virtual convention.

Last month the AMSN Board of Directors made the very difficult decision to change the format of our annual convention from hybrid (in-person and virtual) to all virtual. The convention was to be held in Orlando, Florida, and with the pandemic once again causing infections and hospitalizations to increase due to the delta variant, it became apparent that a change would be necessary.

CEO's Corner - September 2021
August 30, 2021 CEO's Corner - September 2021 Back to a Virtual Convention

As you’ve likely heard, AMSN made the difficult decision to hold its annual convention fully virtually this year for the second year in a row. It was a difficult decision and one the Board of Directors didn’t take lightly.

We wanted to be together in person to celebrate all of you and the incredibly hard year you’ve all experienced. It’s AMSN’s 30th anniversary this year, and we wanted to celebrate our anniversary with you all.

10 Ways Nurses Can Improve Our Overall Health and Well-Being
August 19, 2021 10 Ways Nurses Can Improve Our Overall Health and Well-Being As Medical-Surgical Nurses, let's take some time to improve our health and well-being.

As Medical-Surgical Nurses, we know how important it is to teach our patients the importance of taking care of themselves, but often that same knowledge does not translate into action for taking care of our own individual health and well-being.
