September 29, 2020 AMSN Supports Allocating COVID-19 Vaccines Wisely

COVID-19 vaccines should be allocated first to health care professionals and support personnel close to patients and at risk of catching the novel coronavirus disease, AMSN wrote Sept. 4 to the National Academy of Science in response to its draft framework on mass vaccination processes.

AMSN’s letter added that government and industry should make use of national nursing organizations like AMSN to disseminate evidence-based guidance on COVID-19 vaccination.

Congress, at press time, was completing work on “continuing resolution” legislation keeping Uncle Sam open through Dec. 11.

AMSN supported the House passing increases for Title 8 nurse workforce development, the National Institute of Nursing Research, and the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality late this summer. But the Labor-HHS-Education appropriations bill carrying these priorities was not taken up by the Senate.

Congress was preparing to go home for the stretch run to the November elections without passing additional COVID relief legislation since last March.

Through its Legislative Virtual Fly-in, AMSN had urged Congress to restore and strengthen the National Stockpile with PPE including N95 mask supplies, and to expand mental health resources needed to help patients and caregivers alike.
